Love is not dying

The new album from Jeremy Zucker

It’s very very Whack World

One of the riskiest thing that an artist can do is present a self-critique within the genre it is trying to exist in. Tierra Whack is exploiting the technologies that exist in 2018 in order to critique the technologies themselves and the limitations that innately accompany them.. Tierra Whack’s Whack World Is a genre-bending conceptual album that hyper-aware of itself and the context in which it lives. In our fast-paced consumer culture, Whack presents a hyper-consumable album in the form of a set of fifteen, minute-long tracks. Although each track can be streamed by itself, the collection of tracks are best experienced through the fifteen-minute music video released on YouTube. Originally released on Instagram in one-minute music video form, the debut album gives listeners a taste of the creative, self-aware, and surrealist work to come from Tierra Whack.

Do you know, That I know, that you think that I’m a rockstar?

There’s something really interesting about this band, The 1975. I think, what every art school wishes they could say the produced. Artists, that are not the product of art school have an interesting and unique place in the art world as opposed to many artists that come out of art school. I really appreciate what Matthew Healy and The 1975 have done to be what I would consider more of an artist collective, that created music. They have this awareness of themselves as a band that I find really interesting. It connects to the part of us that craves truth and authenticity. Healy said in an interview I was watching the other day, “My whole shtick revolves around this idea: Do you know, that I know, that you think that I’m a rockstar?”

How Warped Tour killed Rock and Roll

School is out. The sun beats down on every city in America. Kids of all ages, backgrounds, colors, and genders gather at the gates of a temporary chain link fence surrounding a parking lot, a pavilion, a field or an amphitheater. They wait in line, some wait for hours, for the gates to open and to experience the “best summer ever.” On the other side of the fence, bands and artists from all over the world gather on half a dozen stages in one city. These kids get the chance to see their favorites and discover new, fresh, never before seen or heard music. They experience 12 hours of non-stop music, mosh pits, and mania. This has happened 41 times over the course of 8 weeks during the summer for the last 23 years. This is Vans Warped Tour.

DEJA ENTENDU: I'VE HEARD THIS BEFORE

As soon as millennials mention music in a conversation they often begin to conjure a list of their favorite and least favorite music, perhaps a few images of album covers that have become iconic to them. Few recognize the art and design that goes into creating such iconic images and logos. Fewer think of the tactile element that a vinyl record has as you release it from its sleeve and put it on the turntable to be played. Artists used to measure success on the number of copies sold rather than the number of files downloaded. Brand New’s180g vinyl press of Deja Entendu embodies the physical, visual, and audible qualities that make an album like this an iconic staple for its time, genre and generation.
